Collection: Cody Houle - Anishinaabe Artist
Cody James Houle (he/him) is a self-taught Anishinaabe artist based in Brantford, Ontario. Raised in North Bay, Cody has always felt a strong connection to nature and a desire to create.
Art has played an important role in Cody’s journey of reconnecting with his Indigenous identity. Growing up with the effects of intergenerational trauma and colonialism, he struggled with feelings of shame about his heritage. Through his artwork, he has found healing, pride and a stronger connection to his culture.
Although Cody had been creating for many years, it wasn’t until his early thirties that he realized visual art was his true passion. His work includes abstract and colourful floral pieces, but Woodland-style painting remains closest to his heart and cultural roots.
For Cody, art is also a way to share stories and teachings. He believes the work artists leave behind can inspire and teach future generations.
Today, Cody hopes his work will encourage Indigenous youth and communities across Turtle Island to explore their own creativity, tell their stories and find their voices through art.
“Creating is an opportunity to use my voice—to inspire Indigenous youth and Indigenous people across Turtle Island. Our stories matter, and our voices are important.”
